Branch Description
The Collegiate YMCA connects university and high school students to the community in service and leadership through education, outreach, and international work.

We  build the citizens of tomorrow. Unlike what many think of when conjuring images of the local Y, a pool, gymnasium and health and wellness center, our branch has programming that reaches beyond the boundaries of four walls into the fabric of the Pittsburgh community. The Collegiate YMCA is a student centered organization dedicated to developing ethical leaders of exemplary character by applying the principles of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh. Collegiate YMCA programs bridge university students to the surrounding area to serve others, gain leadership, apply learning, and enrich lives while impacting the community by instilling the YMCA character development strategy: Caring - Honesty - Respect - Responsibility

Established in 1905 at the University of Pittsburgh, the Collegiate YMCA  has served the student body and the community at large through volunteering. Through the years the YMCA has provided counseling, alternative spring breaks, off-campus housing, student employment, chartered bus trips home, volunteer placement in YMCA programs and community agencies, as well as freshman orientation.

We seek to attract and unite in active service, individuals of all backgrounds to form a community of young people committed to promoting personal growth and leadership.

Internship available

The Collegiate YMCA Youth & Government program brings the workings of state government alive to students. Clubs are organized in local high schools, where students discuss public policies, organize and articulate ideas, participate in the legislative process and obtain a better understanding of governmental functions. Y&G enables high school students to understand the democratic process through active involvement in the complete legislative process. More importantly Y&G promotes leadership, citizen participation and civic responsibility. High school clubs elect officers, who with a YMCA professional and school faculty member, enlist new members, lead weekly meetings, discussions, debates, prepare delegates for model convention, and raise funds for the program.
Delegates participate in the final three-day event held in April at the state capitol in Harrisburg. The conference is led by teens elected to office by their fellow delegates. The state provides facilities and volunteers act as resources for the students while they debate the issues.  Students debate and vote on the bills that their fellow delegates have written and presented. Bills that pass in committee are then taken to the floor of the House or Senate for full debate and vote
Y&G Clubs meet at student’s local High School.
